Just Do You

We're taught and told to always love others, to care for others, to help others and to be self-less. And I agree. Love has to be spread always. But what about loving ourselves? Caring and helping ourselves? You have to be selfish sometimes. It's okay to be selfish. In fact I think it's essential. I'm not saying you have to stop helping other people but if helping someone costs you your happiness then stop. Rid yourself of the toxic people in your life. The people that are holding you back from loving yourself or from reaching your goals are those who have to be cut loose. How do you expect to help others reach their full potential if you are stopping yourself from fulfilling yours.

It was only this January that I realised I had to stop making myself unhappy in order to make others happy. To stop doing what other people wanted me to do. To stop being who other people wanted me to be. As a person who suffers from depression and anxiety, I know that it is always easier said than done when people tell you to love yourself and be happy. You can't change your whole mind set and outlook over night. Looking at your end goal can be terrifying. I know because looking at my end goal makes me talk myself out of being productive. So take it step by step. Go at a pace that doesn't scare you.

My mental health is still in a bad state. But I've reached a point where I want to change it. I want to create a happier, stronger and more confident me. That's a great place for anyone to be, especially a person with a mental health illness. I have been slowly but surely finding myself since the start of 2018. Which you can read about in my previous post - 5 Things I've Learnt. But there is still so much for me to discover, learn and experience about myself and what I want for my life. So lets do it together. I'm going to show you things that inspired me, tasks I want you to do and affirmations I want you to tell yourself.

Finding yourself starts here. And it starts with you.

[This is going to be a very long post, so I'd go and make yourself a cuppa before continuing on if I were you.]

"Start over, my darling. Be brave enough to
find the life you want and courageous enough to
take it. Then start over and love yourself the
way you were always meant to."
- Madalyn Beck

"It won't be easy, it'll be difficult but this will be
the year she finds herself. This will be the year
she discovers the power and magic that lives
beneath her bones. This will be the year where
she begins to walk away from anything that no
longer deserves her presence."
- R.H. Sin

"It's not about perfect. It's about effort. And when
you bring that effort every single day, that's where
transformation happens. That's how change occurs."

"In any given moment we have two options:
to step forward into growth or to step back into safety."
- Abraham Maslow

"Everything you are seeking is seeking you in return.
Therefore, everything you want is already yours.
It is simply a matter of being more aware
of what you already possess."

"When your clarity meets your conviction,
and you apply action to the equation,
your world will begin to transform before your eyes."
- Lisa Nichols

"The more you know who you are, and what
you want, the less you let things upset you."
- Stephanie Peckins

"Make yourself a priority.
At the end of the day you're your
longest commitment."

"Today, don't let other people's negativity cloud
your views. Continue on your path, and stay
focused on the positive."

"Learn to be alone without being lonely.
Learn to admire your beauty without finding fault.
Learn to love yourself without the love of others."
- H.R.D

"Sometimes you have to lose yourself to discover
who you might yet be. Sometimes what feels
like breaking down is really just breaking free."
- Cristen Rodgers

"Finding your passion isn't just about careers
and money. It's about finding your authentic self
- the one you've buried beneath other people's needs."
- Kristin Hannah

Letting go of all negativity in your life is the first step you have to take before you begin to fulfill your potential. You can't move forward whilst you have something holding you back. Cutting ties with toxic people isn't always as easy as we'd like it to be. If you have people in your life that you care about but are also toxic and they bring you unhappiness, then it's time to be selfish. You need to remove them from your life. If you have someone who makes you feel unhappy, unappreciated or unloved then they'll always stop you from pursuing the life you want and deserve. You need to think like the person you want to become.

It's not only people that can hold you back. You need to stop reliving the pain from your past and stop being afraid of your future to the extent that you are to scared to build one for yourself. If you feel that you have failed yourself in the past - forgive yourself. I'm not suggesting you forget your past, but rather to think of it as obstacles you have overcame in order to become the person you want to be.

What is stopping you from moving forward? Write it all down. Put all your hurt, regret and negativity down on paper. Then I want you to set that piece of paper on fire. Whilst you are watching it burn, I want you to embrace the empowerment that the metaphor brings and let your negativity burn away with it.

Now that you've removed the negativity from your life, you need to focus on all the positivity that is around you. Make a list of everything that makes you happy. From your family to a meme you seen on facebook.

"When you love what you have,
you have everything you need."

Surround yourself with things that make you happy, things that warm your heart every time you look at them. Happiness is the food your soul needs.

"Confidence isn't walking into a room with your nose
in the air, and thinking you are better than everyone else,
it's walking into a room and not having to compare yourself
to anyone else in the first place."

Ah being confident in yourself - it's a tough one that I struggle with everyday. We constantly compare ourselves to people who we think are more attractive than us and we wish we are as confident as them. But confidence isn't something that you have just because you're stereo-typically labelled as 'attractive'. Everyone has their own insecurities no matter how physically attractive they seem. Your confidence comes from within. Once you accept the beautiful body you came in - your confidence will shine through. But you also have to love who you are as a person otherwise your outer shell means nothing.

I want you to tell yourself one thing each day that you love about you. And write them down each day until you realise that you have accepted every part of you. You love your perfect imperfections. Because loving yourself is an endless process.

"Sometimes the place you are used to
is not the place you belong."

Start setting yourself monthly goals.

Don't let other people's negative outlook and opinions on your goals and dreams effect your decisions. This is your life - you make your own damn decisions.

Always follow your intuition. Trust in yourself. And take a leap of faith. No one got what they wanted in life by playing it safe.

Got something to say? Say it. Your thoughts, opinions and views are important. Don't let anybody ever tell you any different. Stand up for what you believe in. It will empower you in ways you could never imagine.

"Do sharks complain about Monday? No.
They're up early, biting shit, chasing stuff,
being scary, reminding everyone that
they are a fucking shark."

Stop caring what other people think of you.
Chase your dreams.
Love yourself.
Love who ever you want to love.

Just do you. And never apologise for it.

"One day it just clicks. You realise what's important
and what isn't. You learn to care less about what
other people think of you and more about what you
think of yourself. You realise how far you've come and
you remember when you thought things were such a
mess that you would never recover. And you smile.
You smile because you are truly proud of yourself
and the person you've fought to become."

  1. Wise words. If you don't look after yourself no one else will x

  4. Lovely post, something that has been on my mind alot lately too. I've been struggling mental health wise too and I've realised it's because I put everyone else and my work before self care. How do you do affirmations? Do you write them or chant them repeatedly? I've always wanted to try it but I don't really know how! Anyway, beautiful post, very uplifting!

    1. Hi Charlotte.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. I have become so much happier now that I have learnt to love myself. Say them to yourself everyday until you believe them.
