21 Things I've Learnt in 21 Years

Every birthday I get asked the same question "do you feel any different?" and the answer has always been - no. But I do feel different after turning 21 yesterday. I can't explain what the difference is but I definitely feel older and it feels like a whole new chapter. So, in light of turning 21, I thought I'd share with you, 21 things that I've learnt in my 21 years.

1. People's opinions do not define your worth.
It's inevitable that some people won't like you, but you should never let that affect how you see yourself.

2. Sambuca is the devil.

3. Love is the closest thing we have to real magic.

4. Life is too short to keep saying yes to shit you hate.

5. Fuck labels! They don't mean shit.
Be who you want, when you want, with whom ever you want. A label can't define a person or a feeling.

6. Being a feminist is common sense.
Being a feminist does not mean that I hate men. It simply means that I want men and women to be treated as equals. We're all people, so we deserve the same rights - common f'ing sense!

7. Have your own opinions.
Our environment, our parents, the news - it all pushes points of views on us and we can sometimes feel as though we have to agree. But we don't. Stay true to yourself by sticking to your own views.

8. Stop apologising for who you are.

9. That Hallmark-movie-love does exist.
I have grown up watching beautiful and touching romance movies and hallmark movies. When I was young, I couldn't wait to fall in love and live happily ever after. As I got older I started to think that romance-movie-love was bullshit. There's no spark when you accidentally touch each other's hands. There's no butterflies or leg pops. But I was wrong. That love does exist because I'm living it right now.

10. There isn't always an answer.
When shitty or confusing things happen in our lives we go looking for answers. But the reality is that sometimes things just happen without a reason. So instead of wasting time looking for answers, use that time to heal and grow. Life is to short to dwell.

11. Friends come and go throughout your life and that's ok.
Everyone enters your life for a reason, but they're not all destined to stay.

12. Live in the moment and take loads of pictures!
I realise they contradict each other, but it's important to find a perfect balance between being present in the moment, and making sure to take pictures so that your memories will live on forever.

13. Pursue your dreams!
As cliche as this is, you do only get one life. So make sure that you do everything you can to make it count.

14. Don't waste time chasing perfection; it's pointless and underwhelming.

15. When you're at 'rock bottom', remember that it's all for a reason. It's just one step in your journey to more.

16. Nobody has shit figured out.
When I was a teenager I thought that all 21 year old's had their life figured out. They didn't. None of us do. The truth is, we're all just winging it. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

17. Never say no to fun!

18. There's no such thing as saying "I love you" too much.
Life is unpredictable so you never know when your loved ones will be taken from you. Make sure that they always know how much you love them.

19. Embrace your weird.
Do you sit there making weird faces and crazy noises or impressions? Yeah same. Don't be ashamed of that...ever! Let it out and be you.

20. Nothing, that's worth something, is easy.

21. There is always going to be someone who is prettier and smarter than you; remember that before you put somebody else down.

I'm looking forward to what this next chapter of my life brings, and to the many lessons that are to come.

Love, Han. xo

  1. Happiest 21st birthday to you gorgeous babe! You truly deserve all the happiness out there, and I hope turning 21 sees all the rainbows and pots of gold your way, you are an absolute star and really deserve the best the world has to offer. This post is so meaningful and beautiful, I love reflections and life lessons. I whole heartedly agree with all of them; in particular your sentiment about rock bottom. Pursuing dreams, not wasting time chasing perfection and that people's opinions do not define your worth. Sending all my love your way angel! <3
