Bloggers Uncensored: with The Fearless Adventurer

Welcome to this weeks Bloggers Uncensored! This is my latest and favourite blog series that I've created. This series is an opportunity for you to hear your favourite bloggers' honest, uncensored, thoughts about real life topics. This weeks blogger is Katie Graves from The Fearless Adventurer.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm from North Carolina, and I am majoring in Strategic Communications with a focus in hospitality and crisis management. I am in the process of looking at hospitality grad schools and in the mean time I'm working as a front desk representative at a local boutique hotel. In my free time, I love to work on my photography, journal, and try different restaurants.

Why do you write?

I write as outlet mainly. Either for my emotions or so that I don't forget my thoughts/travels. I find writing to be a fun way to express yourself and bring people together no matter what it is you want to write about because someone somewhere is going to understand or like it - or not! But that's where improvements come from.

Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because everyone I know either in real life or on social media knows I travel a LOT. I kept getting asked the same questions about where to go, what to do in certain areas, what to pack, etc. and got so tired of typing out my answers individually that I started blogging so all I have to do is copy and paste the link, which makes it easier for everyone. I also love travelling, so it was pretty much a win win for me!

What do you love about the blogging world/community?

I love how inclusive it is and how supportive people are. It's awesome that we all support one another and have the opportunity to grow friendships or business relationships through our blog and community.

What do you hate about the blogging world/community?

While it is inclusive, I hate how in order to be seen as a "good" or "noteworthy" blogger, you have to have a lot of followers. Granted, it helps to have a following but I feel like there's a lot of really talented bloggers out there (like myself) who are just having difficulty gaining followers. I also hate the idea around people following you on Instagram, you follow them back, then they unfollow you just to keep their ratio up. Either follow or don't, it's simple.

In your opinion, who are the most underrated bloggers?

The most underrated bloggers in my opinion would be My Bexcapades, Opposite Tourists, and honestly...myself, too.

What are some hard truths you have learnt about life?

Not everything is going to be handed to you on a silver platter, and not everyone is going to like you. You don't deserve anything, you have to earn things like respect and trust.

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom for me means the ability to do and say as you please, as long as it is not harmful towards others. Of course, we can't sensor what people say, but we should still be mindful of how our actions and words can effect those around us.

What are your thoughts on mental health and how it's portrayed in today's society?

I think that our society is becoming more mindful and understanding of those who have mental health issues. We still have a long way to go, though. Taking care of our mental health can't be achieved by just taking a bubble back and mental health is extremely important for our well being so if someone needs to take a mental health day or isn't acting how they normally do, we need to be mindful of the signs and try to support others the best that we can.

What are your thoughts on feminism and how it's portrayed in today's society?

A lot of people - mainly men - are blowing feminism way out of proportion. All we want is to be portrayed as equals and treated with respect in all aspects - career wise, financially, etc. It also means we want equality for men, too i.e. men getting more paternity leave so they don't miss the important parts in their child's life. All of this "so if you hit me I can hit you back" is just ugly thinking.

What are your thoughts on 'Love is Love' and how it's portrayed in today's society?

Love IS Love. Some members in society are thinking too deep into it all. You don't gain anything by being hateful towards others. People just need to mind their business.

What advice would you give to someone who is fighting a mental illness?

My advice is to not be afraid to speak up! Everyone is dealing with things internally, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be afraid to talk to others. Sometimes, just talking about what it bothering you - or even writing about it - can be a huge weight off of your shoulders. You don't even have to talk to get advice about a situation, just to vent about anything you may be dealing with. It helps me all the time just to be able to talk about it all and not keep it bottled up as it can be extremely emotionally draining for me.

What advice would you give to someone who is being bullied or harassed?

Don't fight back. As hard as it may be not to say something in retaliation, all you are doing is adding fuel to the fire. By sitting back and taking the high road and not show that it's affecting you (even though it may be) you are being the bigger person and eventually, they will hopefully quit. If not, depending on the severity of the issue I would definitely tell your parents or a peer.

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?

MUSHROOMS!! I hate the texture.

What else do you feel strongly about?

So many things haha. I feel like we need to come up with better solutions to fight our issues with plastic rather than just 'banning straws' even though it is a great start!

Let's end with some fun 'This or That' questions.

Love or money?

Work hard or play hard?

Work hard, save money, then travel.
