Bloggers Uncensored: with Style Street Studio


Welcome to this weeks Bloggers Uncensored! This is my latest and favourite blog series that I've created. This series is an opportunity to read your favourite bloggers' honest and uncensored opinions on real life topics. This weeks blogger is Style Street Studio.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hey, I'm Meg. I'm a lifestyle blogger focusing mainly on blogging tips, fashion, beauty and health or as I like to put  it "A style and health blog with a hint of life". I am 22 and I live in Victoria, Australia. I am originally from Ireland. I am a qualified Veterinary Nurse and future Anthropologist.

Why do you write?

I write because I can. I love writing and have always wanted to write my own book. I also have a really hard time keeping to one thing/hobby for longer than a month or two at a time and my blog is almost a year old now so that's definitely something to think about.

Why did you start blogging?

I started to blog because I can connect with people and grow with people. I also wanted to have something that was mine and only mine, but that other people could enjoy or hate or just read. I've had some struggles which I have written about on my blog and I wanted people going through similar stuff to know that they aren't alone.

What do you love about the blogging world/community?

I love how helpful everyone is and how inclusive it is. It's nice to feel a part of a community that I can fully relate to.

What do you hate about the blogging world/community?

Hmm, that's hard because I tend to avoid the crappy parts of the community. I absolutely hate the follow/unfollow game. I also really hate how hard it is to make any sort of indent within the community and how it takes like 3+ years for most of us to actually make our first $100 or reach our first 1000 subscribers.

In your opinion, who are the most underrated bloggers?

I have no clue to be honest. I have spent most of my time trying to up my blogging game for the last 10 months or so, so I've been checking out the bigger names with opt-ins and freebies. If I have to name one blogger it would probably be Kali from Dose of Simplicity or Emma from Emma's Jots.

What are some hard truths you have learnt about life?

That being lazy doesn't get you anywhere and you have to work for what you want. I think the one hard truth that I hate with a passion is that you have to do what you have to do to get anywhere. My dad put his back out when he was 15 but had to fight through the pain because he has no other choice back then. I put my back out too and I'm expected to do the same even though I have a lot more options than my dad did. Does that make sense?

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom is being able to say what you want to say without being called a racist or a misogynist or whatever else. Freedom is not living pay check to pay check. Freedom is the ability to choose what your life is going to be.

What are your thoughts on mental health and how it's portrayed in today's society?

I think people need to learn to understand mental health a lot more. I have mental health problems, yet some people expect way more than I can give or they push it off and ignore it. Society pretends to care about the mentally ill, but they really don't. Publicly they will accept you how you are and advocate for you but behind closed doors they expect you to be like everyone else and do nothing for you. Recently there was a mother who wrote a book about her daughter Ana. Ana was mentally ill and turned to drugs to cope. Her parents begged for help to institutionalise her, so she could get better. She ended up murdering a guy. Prison has helped her to get sober and to get treatment, but she shouldn't have been allowed to get to that point where prison is the only reason she is alive today.

What are your thoughts on feminism and how it's portrayed in today's society?

Feminism can be good and bad. I'm all for equality and the eradication of bad stigmas (like breastfreeding in public). I feel that the good feminists are very quiet whereas the bad ones are the loudest and the ones that society sees on a daily basis. I think that a lot of the bad ones tend to push ideologies and facts that are not true or have been debunked just to give them something to scream about. Like the pink tax or the wage gap. Those topics get shouted from the rooftops, yet the facts show that neither are real or factual at all.

What are your thoughts on 'Love is Love' and how it's portrayed in today's society?

Everyone should be allowed to love whoever they want. I just don't think it should be pushed on people or talked about in schools unless it's sex-ed or something related. Half of society is all for equality while the other half is accusing teachers and LGBT members of whispering into straight children's ears at school. The new Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, had an interview recently where he was asked about conversion therapy. He neither endorsed it nor denied it which to me is pretty anti-LGBT. The only other thing I will mention is the LGBT community itself. Firstly, I am part of the LGBT community, but I disagree with a lot of what happens within in, like Pride Week or Mardi Gras. Anyway, there are a lot of LGBT people saying that they want to be seen as part of society and not a minority anymore, yet they still have Pride Week and Mardi Gras which literallt promotes the fact that they are a minority group and that they need these events so non-LGBT members can understand them. It's the same for women (International Women's Day). It's like both groups want to be accepted into society but regularly do things that just pushes them further from that. They both want the perks of being in the spotlight for their issues but also want to be normal. I don't think you can have it both ways.

What advice would you give to someone who is fighting a mental illness?

As someone who suffers from mental illness, I have been given a lot of advice over the years, most of which is not very helpful at all. In saying that, this is the best advice I've received.
  1. See a mental health professional, not your GP. They can and will help you even if you think they won't.
  2. Don't go straight for medications but don't ignore that option altogether. Try everything on offer whether that be CBT or DBT, medication or counselling. Find what works for you. For me, medication and some counselling are what works for me. CBT and DBT did not.
  3. My favourite piece of advice is basically get over it. I know that sounds bad but honestly it works. I have pretty bad anxiety and for about 6 months I felt like I was going to throw up every time I was in a shop or the car, actually everywhere except my house. I didn't go out for months and if I did, I wouldn't go inside shops or I'd leave as quickly as possible. I even carried a sick bag around with me for those 6 months. Then my boyfriend's mum came to visit, and she told me one thing that has stuck with me ever since "Who cares if you throw up in the supermarket. It's 5 minutes of embarrassment for 5 hours of happiness" Now I can go everywhere and anywhere. In saying that I still have some harder days, but I push through it because I don't want anxiety to rule my life.
What advice would you give to someone who is being bullied or harassed?

This is pretty out there, and I will probably get a lot of crap for it, but I wish I had known this when I was bullied all through high school. I will mention that this also sounds pretty bad too. Basically, ignore the bullies, but if they touch you, even a push or just holding your arm forcefully, then deck them. But don't touch them or hurt them until they do it first. Not only will you feel satisfied, but you also won't get in trouble because they provoked you. If you aren't the fighting type, then don't give them what they want. Don't engage with them or reply to their words. If they hurt you physically then tell someone straight away and document the damage. Or if you know that they hurt you regularly and you see them coming fro you, get a friend to film it discreetly. Basically, keep evidence.

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?

Stupidity! I find that there are a lot of uncultured and uneducated people in the world. I'm not talking about people who dropped out of high school or anything, I'm talking about people who believe the world is flat, vaccines cause autism, or that you just need to have a shower to get rid of AIDS. I also think parents should have their views evaluated about certain topics. Not in a George Orwell way but in a factual way. I remember an episode of Law & Order: SVU where a teenage boy had HIV and his baby sister died from it. His mother told him lies about how HIV is transmitted etc and told him he didn't have it or didn't need treatment for it. Because of these views, his sister died, and he almost did too. I guess it's more of a don't believe everything your parents say and make choices based on your own research and experience.

What else do you feel strongly about?

As a Veterinary Nurse I feel very strongly about my profession and animals in general. I could go on for hours about why people in the veterinary industry deserve more respect and why some things, like prices, are the way they are. I am also really passionate about human euthanasia. I feel that those who are against euthanasia are people who haven't experienced the slow, painful and horrible death or a loved one. Once you go through something like that your whole view of the world changes. Lastly, I am all for self-defence. In Australia is is illegal to carry any potential weapon, even pepper spray. I know that people shouldn't have to protect themselves, but some sadistic freaks are out there still, and no amount of education or help can essentially help them. They are who they are, so we should have the ability to defend ourselves against them.

Let's end this with some fun 'This or That' questions:

Love or money?

Love for sure. Money makes the world go round but it won't bring the same level of happiness as love will.

Work hard or play hard?

Hmmm, I hate working but I also love that feeling of doing something worthwhile or something that makes my life better in the long run. So, I guess I'll have to go with work hard.

Cups in the cupboard: right side up or upside down?

I don't think it matters really. Personally, I like upside down because the cups won't get dusty and it also looks neater.

Chocolate or sex?

I can't pick!

Plan everything or wing it?

A bit of both. I tend to plan everything in advance and organise everything but when the time comes to put that plan into place I just wing it.

Happiness or money?

Happiness for sure. Money can bring happiness yes, but happiness brings way more than money could ever offer.
